Colour-Changing Lighting

Advantages of LED Light

The future of outdoor lighting is in LEDs. The many benefits of LED light in applications from outdoor architectural lighting to torches to emergency vehicle lighting are well established. The benefits of LED light in those applications apply to outdoor lighting as well.

LONG LIFETIME & LUMEN MAINTENANCE

XLamp® LEDs maintain over 70% of their original luminous flux at 50,000 hours — long after conventional outdoor light sources have burned out.

BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Unlike many conventional lighting technologies, LEDs contain no mercury or heavy metals. Not only are LEDs better for the environment during their operational life, the disposal of LEDs will not further pollute our world’s landfills with hazardous waste.

LED LIGHT IS DIRECTIONAL

HID-based light fixtures waste approximately 20 to 50 percent of the light generated due to the lack of directionality of the light source. LED-based fixtures overcome this handicap by making use of a directional point light source.

HIGH COLOUR BRIGHTNESS & EFFICACY

XLamp 4550 XL series and XR LEDs have leading brightness and efficacy for red, green, and blue lamps in their respective product classes. XLamp LEDs are the perfect choice for outdoor colour changing installations in colder climates because the light output and efficacy increases in colder environments..

WIDE RANGE OF SUPPORTING OPTICS AND DRIVERS

Cree works with leading optics and LED driver companies to define compatible products. Many optics vendors have optical solutions tailored to the XLamp LED package to allow customers to create narrow spots of coloured light or create wide, diffuse washes of colour. Likewise, many driver vendors have products that provide complete colour. control and monitoring, allowing you to create any colour. combination or lighting sequence imaginable. Consult Cree’s website for lists of available optics and driver vendors.

FLEXIBLE PRODUCT LINE

The XLamp 4550 XL series and XR LEDs cover an entire range of drive currents to suit almost any possible colour changing application. XLamp 4550 XL LEDs are rated for 125 mA (equivalent to 0.5 W). XLamp XR LEDs are dual-current parts that are rated for both 350 mA (equivalent to 1 W) and up to 700 mA (equivalent to 3 W).

EXCELLENT DESIGN CHOICE

XLamp LEDs are high-quality, leadless, surface-mount packages designed for industry-standard reflow soldering, making them easy to assemble into lighting designs. Also, Cree XLamp LEDs retain the same footprint between product generations. Therefore, upgrading to the next-generation XLamp will require minimal design modification.

Colour Changing

One of the most dramatic and conspicuous uses of LED light has been in colour changing lighting applications. Cree’s XLamp® LED product family is at the forefront of this application and is used worldwide in all types of lighting installations. From lighting exciting events, such as the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino — to lighting world-famous buildings, such as the Hotel Gansevoort in New York City — to creating a stunning colour. environment, such as in fountain and pool lights — Cree XLamp LEDs have been leading the way.

XLamp LEDs are popular for this application because they are easy to design and build into lighting installations. The combination of high light output, low power consumption, and high-reliability materials means that XLamp LEDs are the best choice in colour changing applications.

Another reason for the popularity of XLamp LEDs is that they are affordable. For most colour changing installations, a large amount of light is required. The lighting designer must pay attention to this measure to minimize the total cost of a colour changing installation.
